PhD or Postdoc Position on Quantum Computing and Optimization
How could quantum computing enhance optimization problems that are central to modern industries, such as production planning and logistics?
And how does the algorithmic toolbox of optimization need to be improved to realize these insights?
We are inviting applications for a PhD or postdoctoral position at the intersection of quantum computing and optimization.
As part of the BMBF-funded project QuSol, you will be part of a close-knit interdisciplinary team of academic and industrial experts across Germany in a consortium aimed at investigating how quantum algorithms can be applied to solve complex optimization challenges.
If you are looking forward to creatively combining ideas from different areas to contribute towards making quantum computing a practical tool for solving real-world problems, then you should consider applying!
At Bochum, you can expect an excellent research environment that spans across many areas of computer science and mathematics, including the
Cluster of Excellence CASA and the
Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy.
In addition to exciting research projects and a friendly and stimulating work environment, we can offer a generous travel budget that allows for attending relevant conferences and summer schools to present your work to the international community, visiting collaborators, etc.
The PhD program is entirely in English.
You will be employed on a fully-funded position (100%,
E13 salary) with an initial appointment of up to three years.
The starting date is negotiable.
Your profile
- By default, you have a MSc or PhD degree (or are close to completing one) in mathematics, computer science, theoretical physics, or a related field.
Outstanding candidates with a BSc degree can also be considered for a PhD position.
- You have an excellent academic track record in quantum computing.
- You are curiosity driven, enjoy combining creativity with mathematical precision, and are open to interdisciplinary collaborations.
- You are fluent in written and spoken English (no German required).
For the PhD position, publications (or manuscripts under submission) in related areas are a plus (but not required).
How to apply?
Please email qi@rub.de with subject "QuSol Position" and the following information in a single PDF file:
- Brief cover letter describing your background and research interests
- CV, including
list of publications
- Electronic contact details of 2 referees
- Any other relevant material
(MSc or PhD thesis or draft, GitHub link, ...)
Applications received by Jan 31, 2025 will receive full consideration.
Late applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
We strongly encourage applications from members of any underrepresented group in our research area.
